An AI Citation is any reference — explicit or implicit — inside an answer generated by an AI search engine that attributes a factual claim to a specific brand, person, document, or URL. AI Citations come in three forms. First, explicit superscript citations like Perplexity's numbered sources, where the user can click through to the originating page. Second, inline brand mentions like ChatGPT saying "according to a 2024 study by Harch Atelier" without a clickable link. Third, model-internal citations — the model has memorized the source during training and paraphrases it without surfacing the reference to the user, but the brand reputation is nonetheless reinforced. The strategic value of an AI Citation is asymmetric: a single positive mention inside a category-defining ChatGPT answer can generate more pipeline than a year of position-3 organic rankings, because the user has explicitly asked the model to recommend a solution and trusts its synthesized answer more than a list of paid results. Harch Atelier measures AI Citations per 100 queries as a primary KPI and breaks the metric down by engine, by query cluster, and by sentiment (positive, neutral, negative, comparative-with-competitors).
