Energy Storage
Energy storage systems (batteries, pumped hydro) store electricity for use when generation is low.
Definition
Energy storage is the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time. For renewable energy, storage is critical because solar and wind are intermittent. Technologies include: (1) Lithium-ion batteries — 90% of new storage, 4-hour duration, (2) Pumped hydro — large scale, 10+ hour duration, (3) Flow batteries — long duration, (4) Green hydrogen — seasonal storage, (5) Thermal storage — molten salt for CSP. Harch Corp uses battery storage at its datacenters to ensure 24/7 renewable power and provide UPS backup.
